Port Orchard, Washington is a city located 13 miles west of Seattle. The city explores its watery shores by connecting to the Seattle and Vashon Island areas through means of the Washington State Ferries that run to Sourthworth. In addition, it receives its name from the strait that separates Bainbridge Island from the Kitsap Peninsula, better known as "Port Orchard".

The city of Port Orchard was first settled in the year of 1854 by Wiliam Renton and Daniel Howard, who chose to set up a mill there. However, Port Orchard was not the first name by which this plot of land was known. In 1886, the town was originally platted by Frederick Stevens, who had decided to name the location after his father, Sidney. On September 15, 1890, the town of Sidney, Washington was incorporated, making it the first town in Kitsap County to be both incorporated and platted.

Shortly after the incorporation of Sidney, the U.S. Navy sought a suitable location for another location on the west coast and found that location here in Sidney. This would later become the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

In December 1892, the residents of Sidney petitioned both the state legislature and the Post Office Department to rename the city, "Port Orchard". The legislature refused because Charleston (the area that is known today as West Bremerton) also wanted to use "Port Orchard" as their name. The Post Office Department, however, was going through a similar change and found themselves in the middle of a situation: the "Port Orchard post office" ending up in Sidney and the "Charleston post office" ended up in Port Orchard. Because of this, the names were eventually shifted, giving the Charleston post office to Charleston and renaming the city of Sidney to Port Orchard, as it is today.

There are currently approximately 11,000 residents within the city limits of Port Orchard, sitting on an estimated 8.52 square miles of land and water.
