Gig Harbor, Washington, a city that sits on the shores of the Puget Sound, is one of several cities that claim to be the "gateway to the Olympic Peninsula".
Because of the extensive access to many of the state and city parks within the area and the great opportunity to use the waterfront property for pleasure, paired with boutiques and fine dining, it's no surprise that many tourists find Gig Harbor a wonderful place to visit
The area that is now Gig Harbor was originally explored during a heavy storm in 1840 that caused Captain Charles Wilkes to dock his boat in the harbor that sits throughout this Sound. Later, after the publication of the Wilkes 1841 map of the Oregon Territory, it was known that he referred to this location as "Gig Harbor", after the harbor that sheltered his "gig" (another name for a small boat).
The year of 1867 brought a multitude of immigrants from the Sweden, Norway, and Croatia areas, most of which were fishermen. Finally, on July 12, 1946, Gig Harbor was incorporated. Prior to this incorporation, commercial fishing, boat building, and logging dominated the economy until the construction of the first Tacoma Narrows Bridge in the year of 1940, where the only transportation between Gig Harbor and Tacoma was by steamship.
Today, the population of this smaller-sized city sits at about 7,100 residents, most of which who send their kids to one of 20 local schools that sit within the harbor region.
In regards to tourism, Smithsonian Magazine listed Gig Harbor as number 5 on its list of 20 Best Small Towns in America in 2012, and Coastal Living Magazine ranked it number 1 on its list of the Top 10 Harbors. These tourism opportunities are continuously growing, especially with the addition of the Heritage Distilling Company in 2012, allowing the multiple awards won by it to help generate a better name for the area.
